The Secrets to Perfect Weed Pancakes
Keep the following pancake making tips in mind for perfect cannabis pancakes every time.
- For fluffy weed pancakes, like the recipe on this page below, or variations like buttermilk pancakes the texture of the batter will affect the outcome. Too thick and the pancakes will be gluey and undercooked on the inside. Too runny, and they will spread out and won’t fluff up. There is a perfect middle ground, thick, but loose enough to slowly run off a spoon or measuring cup.
- Use a whisk for a smooth batter without activating gluten. With pancake batter, unless otherwise instructed, you do not want to over beat it. A whisk does a good job of getting rid of flour lumps while not over beating.
- Preheat your cooking surface! The difference between pancakes that stick, or that are gloopy undercooked messes is properly preheated skillet or griddle or one that’s not yet ready. Put your pan on medium heat and wait at least 2 minutes before dropping the first pancake.
- After preheating and before adding batter, lightly grease the cooking surface with a small amount of butter or oil. Yes, this does include nonstick pans.
- Use a small measuring cup so you get even portions and uniformly sized pancakes. In the recipe below I used 1/4 cup measuring cup.
- To form a pancake, start pouring the batter from the middle, then continue pouring slowly in a circular motion to make perfectly round cannabis pancakes.
- Don’t rush the cooking process! Let the underside cook slowly to a golden brown color before flipping. A good sign it’s ready to flip are large bubbles forming on the uncooked side. Use a spatula to take a peek at the underside. If it’s golden brown, flip your weed pancake over.
- Keep the heat no higher than medium. Medium-low is better. Direct heat can get too hot and we are cooking with cannabis. However even if the outside gets toasty, inside the pancake will be cool enough to keep the THC active.
Weed Pancake Variations and Mix-Ins
When it comes to cannabis pancakes, feel free to “play with your food.” You can make these cannabis infused pancakes extra special by mixing in other ingredients. Below are just a few suggestions. You will probably come up with more on your own. Mix in a single extra or mix and match for custom flavor blends.
- Berries! Blueberries are classic but strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc. also work
- Fruit! Think finely diced bananas, peaches, mangoes, etc.
- Coconut, toasted or untoasted
- Chocolate chips or peanut butter chips
- Nuts
Marijuana Pancake Toppings
Traditional pancake toppings also work well on weed pancakes. If you need an extra dosage boost beyond what is in the batter, you can always top with additional cannabis butter. Other toppings include:
- Maple Syrup
- Fruit Syrups
- Apple or other fruit butters
- Fruit compotes
- Honey
- Fresh fruit or berries and their juices, with or without whipped cream
- Fruit pie fillings, with or without whipped cream
How to Make Healthier Marijuana Pancakes
Traditional white flour is the ingredient that makes traditional pancakes a less than ideal healthy choice.
In the next few weeks and months I will add to this feature with more pancake recipes, including “healthier options.” In the meantime, know that you can substitute gluten free flour for regular and still get good results.
You can also opt to substitute part of the white flour for whole wheat flour.
Know that whole wheat flour absorbs a bit more liquid than all-purpose flour. Likewise, you may need to add a little more liquid to your batter to get a proper consistency when using all or part whole wheat flour.
When making whole wheat weed pancakes, a generally opt for a blend of 50% whole wheat flour to 50% all-purpose flour.
Of course if you are watching carbs, pancakes generally are not a good choice at all, although watch the recipe section below as I do have a low(er) carb keto weed pancake version coming up using cottage cheese.
How to Add Cannabis to Pancakes
The recipe below uses melted cannabutter to medicate the pancakes. If you don’t already know how to make it, check out my 4 Foolproof Ways to Make Cannabutter tutorial before starting this recipe.
You could also opt to medicate with a cannabis concentrate like rosin, dry ice kief, hash, hash oil, FECO etc. Use all regular butter instead of cannabutter, gently heat, and stir in your concentrate until dissolved. Then add the concentrate infused butter to the recipe.
About Dosages for Marijuana Pancakes
Each of the pancakes in the fluffy weed pancakes recipe below will have about 25 mgs THC per pancake IF you made your cannabutter from 10% THC weed and you used a 1/2 ounce or 14 grams to make 1 cup of cannabutter.
To adjust the recipe to reflect the strength of the cannabis you are using, and to get the dosage you personally need, be sure to either take my FREE edibles dosing class, or even better get my $5.00 dosage calculators that do all the math for you.
